Course Description:
The CPUT Academic Leadership Programme ( ALP) is designed for newly appointed HODs and acting HODs to support them in navigating their new roles in a safe space provided to discuss their work and academic practices. The CPUT Academic Leadership Programme is established to promote interactions between academics in different departments/faculties to enhance academics’ professional competences. This is a space where they can share their experiences and help one another in developing robust discussions and community of practice. The heads of departments should not try to carry the whole department on their own shoulders ( Galos & Bosman, 2021; Rastogi, S. 2022). They require support and skills on how to delegate work to others and how to trust the academics they lead with the projects they are working on. They are at the forefront in policy implementation and smooth running of the departments. At CPUT, ALP is aligned to Vision 2023 and framed along ONENESS and SMARTNESS.
ALP aims to support and capacitate newly appointed academic leaders, mainly HODs, to leadership and management positions. This is because of the dual nature of their appointments, as academics and as managers/leaders of the departments/faculties.
